Evidence of a genuine and continuing relationship is central. Well-prepared applications reduce delays.
Partner visas keep families together. Applications are costly and evidence-heavy, so getting them right first time matters.
Partner visas are usually a two-stage process, temporary then permanent. Applicants must show a genuine and continuing relationship, and sponsors must meet sponsorship requirements.
Understand the next step
Describe the proposed pathway and relationship history without assuming eligibility from the relationship alone. Ask which evidence is relevant to the particular application.
Confirm professional and government charges separately and do not rely on a promised outcome.
Devonport, Burnie and Ulverstone are the listed centres for North West & West Coast. An office on the north coast may still be a considerable journey for a West Coast client.
For partner & family visas, ask which parts of the work the firm handles itself and whether it has relevant TAS experience. Let the lawyer know if a property, employer, other party or existing proceeding is outside North West & West Coast. Your home address alone does not determine the applicable process.
Gather identity documents, visa records, decision letters and application history. Confirm who will give the advice and their scope of work.
Ask which requirements and evidence need assessment, including translations or reports. No provider can guarantee the application outcome.
Agree who receives correspondence and tracks requests. Keep a complete copy of lodged material and understand what you approve before submission.
Separate professional fees from government charges, translations and other expenses. Preparing an application does not necessarily include a review or court proceeding.
Ask for a written scope identifying the work you are authorising, the person responsible and when costs will be reviewed. If you only want advice on one step, say so before the firm begins wider work.
Provide expiry dates and the entire decision letter immediately. Review rights and dates depend on the particular decision and circumstances.
Tasmania has a two-tier court system: the Magistrates Court and the Supreme Court, with no intermediate court. Guardianship, anti-discrimination and many review matters are heard by TASCAT. The Law Society of Tasmania issues practising certificates and the Legal Profession Board of Tasmania handles complaints.
Good to know
Financial, social and household evidence, and statements about the relationship's history and commitment.
Most matters start in the Magistrates Court. More serious cases go to the Supreme Court of Tasmania. Family law matters are heard by the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.
Practising certificates in Tasmania are managed by the Law Society of Tasmania. You can check a solicitor's status on its public register or by contacting it directly.
