What to discuss at the first meeting
Describe the facts and desired result if you are unsure which category fits. A general practitioner can explain what they handle and whether another specialist should be involved.
Agree who is responsible for the next step so an initial discussion does not leave urgent work unassigned.
Working with a firm in Barossa & Adelaide Hills
Mount Barker, Nuriootpa and Gawler provide different starting points across Barossa & Adelaide Hills. If a matter concerns land and a business together, identify the owner and operator separately.
For general practice (regional generalist), ask which parts of the work the firm handles itself and whether it has relevant SA experience. Let the lawyer know if a property, employer, other party or existing proceeding is outside Barossa & Adelaide Hills. Your home address alone does not determine the applicable process.
How the engagement may progress
- 01
Bring a short chronology and the document that prompted the enquiry. Identify the people involved and immediate dates.
- 02
Separate connected issues and decide what needs attention first. Agree who will coordinate the work or a referral.
- 03
Request a clear scope, estimate and contact person. If another firm becomes involved, confirm how documents and responsibilities will be transferred with your permission.
Fees and the scope of work
Confirm whether the first appointment includes document review and written advice. Request separate estimates when several issues need to be prioritised.
Ask for a written scope identifying the work you are authorising, the person responsible and when costs will be reviewed. If you only want advice on one step, say so before the firm begins wider work.
Dates to raise at first contact
Show notices and deadlines even if you do not understand them. Confirm that a practitioner can act before an urgent date rather than relying on a routine appointment.
